The photographs in the Light and Shadows exhibition were taken by young Sudanese refugees in Uganda. The young people attended Mungula Secondary School in Adjumani in November 2003.
The young people were given the freedom to photograph their daily life for a week. All in all 1500 photographs were taken and 150 of them were chosen for the Light and Shadows exhibition. A few of these photographs are on show on this site exhibition. The pictures present the young peoples lives in a warm atmosphere, and show what is important and of value to them. For some of the young people photography was a new experience and some of the pictures here are their very first attempt at taking a photograph. The young enjoyed this new experience and way of learning. The young people have all received copies of their own photographs.
The 32 young people who took the photographs attended Mungula Secondary School in Adjumani, Northern Uganda. They have fled with their parents from Sudan to Uganda in the 1990s and have great hopes of sometime returning to their home country.
With the photographs the young people present their families, their friends, pets and leisure pursuits. The pictures also show their daily tasks: cooking, cleaning, fetching water and fieldwork. Normal school work also gets its share of pictures: school meals, studying, favourite teachers and the building site of the new school building.
