Adjumani

The area of Adjumani is in northern Uganda, close to the Uganda-Sudan border. The region has a Ugandan population of about 135 000 and the region also hosts around 95 000 Sudanese refugees. The refugees live in various settlements, for example in Keyo and Mungula. Refugees have arrived from Sudan steadily since the 1980s. The refugee families are given a plot of land to farm and the refugees live in village like settings. The area has several primary schools, but only two secondary schools.

Mungula Secondary School was founded by Sudanese refugees. Most of the teachers are refugees who arrived in Uganda in the 1980s and '90s. The school has 419 pupils and 4 levels. Female pupils make up about 16 percent of the pupils. There are less pupils in the the higher levels. Many have to take breaks in their education due to financial difficulties. Many of the girls leave school because they are pregnant or are about to get married. Some of the girls must stop studying due to housework. The pupils are of different ages, because many have taken breaks in their education and return to school when the possibility rises again. 83 percent of the pupils are Sudanese refugees. The school has 17 teachers of whom only one is female. The taught subjects are English, maths, music, social studies, economics, accounting, religion, histiry, maths, agriculture, physics, chemistry, biology and geography. The language of teaching is English.
